by Petersen

The Petersen Automotive Museum announced today that it will mark its 20th anniversary in 2014 by commencing a complete exterior transformation and a dynamic redesign of the interior, resulting in a world class museum that will showcase the art, experience, culture and heritage of the automobile. Displays will feature the prominence of the automobile in Southern California, as well as cars, trucks and motorcycles from around the world. In addition to the facility upgrade, the new Petersen will feature a refined and upgraded permanent collection and an expansion of rotating displays, galleries, technology and story-telling, providing visitors with fresh, new experiences throughout the year.

The exterior design by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates will transform the Petersen building into one of the most significant and unforgettable structures in Los Angeles. Long ribbons of stainless steel will wrap around three sides and over the top of the deep red building, making a visceral statement that evokes the imagery of speed and the organic curves of a coach-built automobile. At night, the color and forms will be lit from within to accentuate the steel sculpture and act as a beacon in the neighborhood known as The Miracle Mile.

“As we approach the Petersen Automotive Museum’s 20th anniversary, our goal is to design and build an exterior as stunning as the vehicles and displays housed inside,” said Peter Mullin, the Petersen’s Chairman of the Board. “For two decades this museum has charmed visitors with its fantastic collection and its focus on education and entertainment. Our plan is to work with the best and brightest minds in architecture, automotive history and interactive design to give the people of Los Angeles and the world a place where they can be immersed in the culture, sights and sounds of the greatest vehicles ever built.”

The transformation will extend to the museum’s interior as well, with a proposed additional 15,000 square feet of display space. Redesigned galleries will feature state-of-the-art lighting, digital displays and immersive learning stations that will tell the stories of the people and machines that changed the world over the past century. Education programs will showcase a restored and upgraded permanent collection that includes historically significant American and European classics, hot rods, groundbreaking race cars, the latest in alternative fuel technology, cars with Hollywood heritage and even vehicles designed and built in Los Angeles itself.

The Petersen will continue the mission set forth by its founder, Robert E. Petersen, to showcase the automobile’s role in art and culture, both locally and globally, while celebrating Southern California’s place as the epicenter of the automotive landscape. The museum will immediately begin a capital campaign to raise funds needed for the exterior renovations. For more information on the new Petersen, visit http://www.Petersen.org

Phil Hill - The Life of a Legend

Phil Hill: The Life of a Legend  - new exhibit opens today at the Petersen Automotive Museum

Few motorsports icons command greater respect than Phil Hill, but his accomplishments did not stop with winning auto races. In addition to being the world’s first and only American-born Formula 1 champion, he was a student of automobile history, an accomplished mechanic, a classic car restorer, a skilled photographer, and a family man. Created in collaboration with Phil’s son Derek, the Petersen Automotive Museum’s Phil Hill tribute exhibition will take a revealing look into the life and work of this racing legend interpreted through artifacts ranging from the vehicles he raced to the helmets he wore.

Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum

Last month I found myself in McMinnville, Oregon with a couple hours of free time so I decided to visit the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum, home of the Spruce Goose. This is a fabulous facility with three main buildings at this time, one for the Spruce Goose and the Aviation and Firearms collections, one for the Space collection and an IMAX  theater in the third building. The property also has various planes and armored vehicles scattered around including a 747 that will sit on top of the new building that will house a water park. Grape vineyards surround the back side of this complex and you can buy grape juice from the grapes in their gift shops.

Next time I'm in Oregon and have spare time I'll be going back to explore this place more, for now you can see what I saw here, enjoy!

Lyon Air Museum

Lyon Air Museum, located across the runway from the passenger terminal at John Wayne Airport, SNA, in Santa Ana, CA. This is part of the private collection of General William Lyon. The Lyon Air Museum exhibit is comprised of authentic aircraft, rare vehicles, all in working condition, and related memorabilia, with the emphasis on World War II era exhibits.

The planes exhibited are an A-25, B-17, B-25, C-47 and a DC-3, again all in flying condition! There are also military vehicles from Germany, Japan and the U.S. plus war era classics from the General's vast collection. There is also a Helm's bakery van parked next to the DC-3 as if it were provisioning the next flight. Check out this fascinating collection at the Lyon Air Museum next time you're near John Wayne Airport and see the rest of the pictures here.

Video preview of tomorrow's Icons of Speed & Style auction at the Petersen

Chris Brown, Marketing Manager at the Petersen, just sent me the links to these videos from today. In his message he apologized for the editing, other than titles they are straight out of the camera.

The Icons of Speed & Style by RM Auctions is sure to be an historic event, just look at the cars. I was there to shoot it also but it will be a few days before I have time to get the pics loaded, so much going on this weekend. The RM Auction is tomorrow at the Petersen Automotive Museum, I'll be at Cruising for a Cure in Costa Mesa and Sunday I'll be at the Coronado Festival of Speed - whew.

Enjoy the Videos...
